Real MBB Exit Stories: A Global Roundup from People We Actually Know

Career Transition

"MBB backgrounds don't carry weight anymore." "You have to take a pay cut to land anything in this market." "AI has made consulting experience irrelevant." — Sound familiar? Here's the reality, based on people we actually know.

Today, we're sharing real MBB exit stories from people in our own networks — no hypotheticals, no LinkedIn folklore. Just facts.

By Tenure: When Do Most People Leave?

The most common "graduation" window is 2–3 years in. Senior Consultants and Engagement Managers / Project Leaders have the widest range of options. The higher up you go in MBB, the fewer roles on the market can match your seniority and compensation — which is why more than half of Partners who leave end up starting their own ventures.

Exit Path 1: Corporate Strategy & Transformation Roles

This remains the most traditional and popular exit. Large corporates hire MBB alumni into strategy departments or transformation-oriented roles such as Transformation Officer or Commercial Excellence Program Lead. EMs and Project Leaders typically land Senior Manager or Director-level positions, while Consultants tend to enter at the Manager level.

Real examples from our network:

  • Former MBB EM, Paris → Head of Strategy (France) at a French industrial conglomerate
  • Former MBB PL, Shanghai → Head of Strategy at a leading Chinese new energy company
  • Former MBB Senior Consultant, New York → Senior Manager, Market Strategy at a major US pharma company

Exit Path 2: Startups

The pace, flexibility, and creative freedom of startups attract a significant share of MBB talent. For many ex-consultants, "generating impact" can be more appealing than a title bump. And with the potential for founding-stage equity, a successful IPO can mean outright financial independence.

Real examples from our network:

  • Former MBB Junior Partner, Paris → CEO of a French artisanal cheese startup
  • Former MBB PL, London → COO of a European edtech company

Exit Path 3: Private Equity

PE is known for its elite culture and top-tier compensation, making it a dream destination for investment bankers and senior consultants alike. But PE roles are fiercely competitive — with waves of candidates from bulge-bracket banks and other PE firms, typically only those with exceptional networking skills within the MBB ecosystem manage to land these positions.

Real examples from our network:

  • Former MBB Junior Partner, Germany → Principal at KKR
  • Former MBB EM, Hong Kong → Investment Manager at a multinational PE firm
  • Former MBB Partner, Copenhagen → Partner at a European VC firm

Exit Path 4: Entrepreneurship

MBB firms are magnets for ambitious, driven people — so it's no surprise that many go on to build their own companies. The MBB brand on a founder's CV also strengthens their hand when courting investors. From tech and manufacturing to consumer goods and investment funds, you'll find ex-MBB founders across virtually every sector.

What About Compensation?

Since MBB pay is already at the top of the market, matching or achieving a 5–10% bump on exit is considered a solid outcome. Some do manage 30%+ increases or higher — but that comes down to individual negotiation and the specific opportunity. Results vary.

Are MBB Alumni Still in Demand?

Absolutely. MBB alumni remain the first choice for many corporate strategy roles — especially when the hiring manager is an alum themselves, as they tend to favor former colleagues. Some positions are even posted exclusively within MBB alumni networks.

That said, so-called "MBB babies" — those with only consulting experience and no prior industry background — are increasingly at a disadvantage compared to experienced hires who joined MBB after several years in industry. Pure advisory experience can be perceived as "not grounded enough." The most sought-after candidates are hybrid profiles who combine both industry and consulting experience.

Every year, people complain about the macro environment. And every year, people still land exceptional exits despite the headwinds.

If you're currently navigating a consulting exit or your next career transition, the first thing to do is tune out the noise — the negativity online and around you brings nothing but anxiety. It doesn't help.

Success is made, not given. Channel your energy into belief, action, creation, trust, and growth — and your own exit path will reveal itself, naturally.
